Shanghai Donghai Bridge 102MW Offshore Wind Farm Pilot Project is the first of its kind in China. The development and construction of the project is of great significance in improving China's offshore wind power equipment manufacturing capacity, accumulating experience in construction management of offshore wind power, as well as promoting energy conservation and emission reduction, conservation of land resources and optimizing energy structure in Shanghai.

On the "Launch Ceremony for Synchronization of Shanghai Donghai Bridge 102MW Offshore Wind Power Generation Pilot Project" on the morning of July 6, Zhang Guobao, Deputy Director of the National Development and Reform Commission and Director of National Energy Administration, and Ai Baojun, Vice Mayor of Shanghai, pressed the start button together, as gigantic impellers of 34 wind turbines on the wind farm rotated, delivering clean power from the East China Sea to the Shanghai power grid, contributing to the Shanghai World Expo.

Designed and built independently by China, the Donghai Bridge Wind Farm consists of 34 3MW wind turbines with a total installed capacity of 102MW independently developed by Sinovel. The wind farm offshore project was officially started in September 2008, and the first wind turbine was erected with success in March 2009. In September of the same year, the three wind turbines were connected to the power grid. In February this year, the 34 wind turbines were installed. On June 8, all wind turbines were connected to the grid for test run.

The Donghai Bridge Wind Farm achieved a number of "firsts" in the history of wind farm construction: the first time to use 3MW offshore units independently developed, indicating that China was ranked one of the world's most advanced in manufacturing high-power wind turbine equipment; the first time to use integral hoisting of offshore wind turbines, greatly reducing the construction period at sea by enabling the assembly of 10 units on board and hoisting 8 units at sea; the first time in the world to use high-rise pile cap foundation design, an effective solution to technical problems such as bearing, uplift resistance and horizontal displacement of tall wind turbines.

Supported by the National Development and Reform Commission, the National Energy Board and relevant municipal departments, the preliminary work for Donghai Bridge Wind Farm Phase II (100MW) has been approved by the relevant government department. Phase II will provide a pilot platform for more sophisticated wind turbines with greater unit capacity.
